Which football cards sell
Football has two worlds: collector cards for adults (Topps Chrome, Finest, Panini Prizm, Select) with parallels, numbering and autographs β and trading card games for kids like Match Attax or Adrenalyn XL, printed in huge quantities. Both can be sold, but at very different prices.
- Topps Chrome and Chrome Sapphire Bundesliga: the standard for Bundesliga rookies and refractor parallels.
- Topps Chrome and Finest UEFA Club Competitions (Champions League): in demand all over Europe, especially stars of the big clubs and young talents.
- Panini Prizm, Select and Donruss: World Cup, national team and league sets β Prizm parallels are the counterpart to Topps refractors.
- Match Attax and Adrenalyn XL: usually cents per card; the value lies in limited editions, gold and numbered cards and complete sets.
- Panini stickers and albums: complete, well-kept albums and early stickers of great players can be sought after; loose bulk stickers bring little.
What makes a football card valuable
With football cards, almost always the same features decide the price. Check them before you set a price:
- Rookie card: a player's first cards in a flagship set (often with an RC logo) are the most sought after β especially young Bundesliga and Champions League talents.
- Numbered parallels: /499 is entry level, /99 and /50 are in demand, /25, /10 and /5 are rare, 1/1 is unique. The number is usually on the front or back.
- Autographs: signatures directly on the card (on-card) are usually worth more than sticker autos; rookie autos are the top tier.
- Graded slabs: a PSA 10 or BGS 9.5 of a sought-after rookie can fetch many times the price of the raw card.
- Player and moment: transfers, titles, national team β football prices react quickly to what happens on the pitch.
Typical mistakes when selling football cards
These mistakes cost sellers of football cards real money most often:
- Parallel not recognised: a refractor or colour parallel is listed as a base card. Tilt the card in the light and compare it with the checklist in the catalogue.
- Match Attax sold off one by one: listing hundreds of common cards individually costs more in postage than it earns. Common cards belong in a lot, only limited cards individually.
- Pricing by listings instead of sales: buy-it-now prices on auction sites are wishful thinking. The market value in the catalogue shows what was really paid.
- Wrong set: Topps Chrome, Chrome Sapphire and Topps Gold Bundesliga look alike but have their own checklists and prices.
- Poor photos of chrome cards: reflections hide scratches and parallel patterns. Shoot in daylight without flash and slightly tilted.
