Topps Chrome vs. Panini Prizm
Two names shape the modern sports card market. Understanding them means understanding why some cards are in demand and others are not.
Licences: who may print what?
In soccer, Topps has printed the UEFA Champions League since 2020 and the Bundesliga for many years (Topps Chrome Bundesliga, Match Attax); Panini is present with Premier League products (Prizm, Select) and national federation licences, among others. In the US, Panini printed the NBA and NFL for years; the NBA licence moves to Topps (Fanatics) from the 2025/26 season, the NFL follows in 2026. For collectors that means: Prizm rookies of recent years remain the reference for their seasons, Topps Chrome becomes important for the new ones.
Design and parallels
Topps Chrome stands for the classic chrome look with refractors: base, refractor, then colours (Sepia, Purple, Blue, Green, Gold /50, Orange /25, Red /5, Superfractor 1/1). Panini Prizm has its silver prizms as the entry point and above them a wealth of patterns (Hyper, Wave, Mojo, Cracked Ice) and colours (Blue /199, Red /99, Gold /10, Black 1/1).
Both lines offer autograph cards, rookie autos and limited inserts. Chrome is more deeply rooted among soccer collectors in Europe, Prizm among NBA and NFL collectors worldwide.
Prices and value development

Which line suits you?

What happens to Prizm NBA cards after the licence change?
They remain valid, licensed cards of their seasons. The rookie cards of the Prizm era continue to be collected and traded – a licence change does not devalue existing cards.
